U.S. building materials sales surge in May

WASHINGTON — U.S. retail sales in May logged their largest gain in six months, rising by 0.8% against a projected 0.4%. Stronger vehicle sales led the way among gains in a variety of categories, pointing to a quickening economic pace in the second quarter. Sales of building materials shot up by 2.4% last month following a 0.8% drop in April.
